What are the things you should know before taking this Medicine?
Abstral should not be used unless you are already using around-the-clock opioid medicine and are tolerant to it.
Abstral should not be used if allergic to fentanyl or if there are conditions such as severe asthma or other breathing problems, or a stomach or bowel obstruction (including paralytic ileus).
To ensure Abstral’s safety for use, it should be communicated to your doctor if there is a history of:
- Any type of breathing problem or lung disease
- Head injury, brain tumor, or seizures
- Low blood pressure, slow heartbeats, or other heart rhythm disorder
- Drug or alcohol addiction, depression, schizophrenia, or hallucinations
- Liver or kidney disease
- Urination problems
- Problems with the thyroid, gallbladder, or pancreas.
Additionally, it should be disclosed to your doctor if there are children living in the home where the medicine will be stored, as the amount of fentanyl in Abstral can be fatal to a child.
Using Abstral during pregnancy could lead to the baby becoming dependent on the drug, resulting in life-threatening withdrawal symptoms after birth. Babies born dependent on habit-forming medicine may require medical treatment for several weeks. It is important to inform the doctor if pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Do not breast-feed while you are using this medicine.
